Cabin Counselors / Activity Helpers

KEY FUNCTION
Cabin counselors live in cabin with campers and serve as their leader during camp. They monitor the daily health and safety of each camper assigned, and identify and meet the campers’ needs.
Activity helpers run activities for campers and help with breaks and meal setup / cleanup.

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum age of 19 years for Kids Week, 19 years for Day Camp / Hobé Juniors, or 21 years for Teen Week
Ability to relate to one’s peer group
Ability to provide guidance, verbal instruction, and supervision to others in a caring, supportive manner
Ability to assist in teaching program activities in a caring, supportive manner
Self-motivated, good character, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience and self-control
Open and honest in relationships; willing to learn from experience
Willingness to participate in camp activities
Flexible and able to respond positively to changes in duties or schedule
Current CPR and FIRST AID preferred

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Identify and meet the needs of the campers
Work together with others to carry out camp programs as planned or revised
Encourage an atmosphere of respect, acceptance, & enthusiasm
Follow and enforce all camp policies, rules, and regulations

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Attend pre-camp training, in-camp training, and daily staff meetings
Provide opportunities for each camper to be successful at some experience
Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving
Be on time for flag ceremony, announcements, meals, activities, and campfire
Assist with camper check-in and check-out as assigned
Other duties as needed or desired
Request advice from Counselor Leader, Directors, or Staff Support Liaison for any problems
Cabin / Group counselors (in addition to the above)
Know where campers are at all times. For overnight campers, perform bed check at curfew
Guide campers in participating in all activities and chores; participate in all activities with them
Help campers develop sense of group unity, plan skits and cheers
Ensure that at least one staff member is with campers at all times
Monitor general health and well-being of campers and contact medical staff for any medical problems
Activity counselors (in addition to the above)
Help prepare and run, and participate in, assigned activity, under the direction of the Program Director and Activity Leader
Assist with meal setup, cleanup, and counselor breaks as assigned
Night counselor: Help assigned group during the evening, mealtimes, and other free times

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Protect confidentiality of campers and staff
Physically able to participate in all camp activities
Able to understand and follow instructions given by directors and leaders
Able to communicate with and instruct others, both verbally and nonverbally
Able to observe and assess camper behavior, & enforce appropriate regulations
Able to identify & respond to hazards; able to assist in emergency situations
Form a team with other camp staff that is dedicated to providing the best camp experience for all campers

POSITION TYPE: Volunteer, duties primarily occur onsite during the camp sessions

RESPONSIBLE TO: Camp Director, Assistant Director, Program Director, Activity Leaders, Cabin Counselor Leader
